Huron Indians have an ancient legend about the origin of tobacco. It says when the land was barren and the people were starving a woman was sent to the world by the Great Spirit to save the humanity. She walked everywhere on the land and touched the soil. At the places where her right hand reached, the soil started growing potatoes. At the reach of her left hand corn grew. When the land became rich and fertile, she sat down to rest. As the woman arose, the tobacco grew in that place.

Nice post. This is how my family came about. Before James Town, the English, Dutch, French and Spanish had been trading with the American Indians, in my case my family were Cherokee Indians out of South Carolina who grew and traded tobacco to the English. So what was once a product that grew the American economy is now seen as a moral wrong or evil, so your post is refreshing.

Thanks Drema.

Yeah it seems the Puritans right this second seem to have the upper hand, but as we know from history, the upper hand bounces back and forth.

I'm thinking when tobacco is finally outlawed completely, who will benefit from the black market that will surely arise? My opinion is that the health police are somehow filling their bank accounts - the idea being that money is a universal common denominator. Anyone have a thought on this?

I had never thought about it before, but you are right. When cigarettes become badly over-priced or outlawed, it will create a black market. Organized crime rings will make money, and the retailers will be out the sales and the state will get zero in taxes. Instead of taking a reasonable amount, they will end up with nothing. Penny wise and pound foolish!

Nice article with beautiful graphics. What we are being subjected to is just the beginning. I sure am glad I am not overweight. Considering the numbers and quantities of "weightloss" drugs in the marketplace I suspect that the next big push will be to tax those who "weigh too much." The most galling thing to anyone in government (local, state or federal) is to see a missed opportunity to steal more from the public in the form of fines and taxes. But, come this August, they are going to have a hard time getting anymore money from me because I will,
