Some time back I had a batch of dry tobacco. I had no distilled water (the wife watered her African Violets with it) so I just used filtered tap water.
I was surprised just how much the tobacco tasted like chlorine. This was a noob mistake but I got to thinking. if Tobacco can pick up the tast from the water what other taste can tobacco also pick up.

I dehydrated the tobacco by putting it on some parchment paper (I think the ink in newspapers also ads a taste to tobacco) When the tobacco was crisp to the touch I put it into a Zip lock container. I took some paper towel wet it with a cap full of Jim Bean, placed it into a shot glass and popped it into the container. The Jim Bean did not come into contact with the tobacco.

3 days later I poped a hydrometer into the container and the RH was about 75% so Opened the container removed the Jim Bean and let the tobacco gas off the alcohol.
I closed the container again and after a short while I checked the RH again. 70%
I stuffed three tubes with my now Jim Bean smelling tobacco and I'll be darned if the tobacco did not have a very light Jim Bean flavor.

The tobacco smells strong of the Jim Bean but the taste is very mild and ads a pleasant twist.
I'm almost hoping my next batch of The Good Stuff comes in a little dry again so I can experiment with other types of Booze. LOL

Lots of people who grow their own will flavor their tobacco. Honey is a favorite for many. I've tried coffee but it takes a pretty strong solution of coffee to give it any flavor.

Most will mist their tobacco directly and allow it to dry.

I thought about misting but the problem I personally have with this is that once burnt the flavoring changes chemically and becomes something new and I don't know what that new chemical is or if it is good for me or not.
granted I don't know if Jim Bean water vapor does the same or not.

I know this sounds kind of Pansy-ish... But now and then I'll take about a 1 oz batch of my daily smoke and place it in a seperate container. Instead of using disks to hydrate, I'll slice up an apple or peach and put a couple slices on a piece of saran wrap on top of the tobacco before sealing. 2 days later, I have a lightly sweet "dessert" tobacco to mix a few sticks in with my regular smokes.

Several of the ladies I work with are always begging me for one, and the sweetened smokes are a nice change of pace for me once in a while.

Hey Crakerjack,

I like your style!

Jim and I are very old friends and everything goes better with Beam. I think I will give this a try, but will enjoy a shot along with my smoke.

I'm just developing my myo hobby, but I was wondering if orange peels/pulp, or lemon, or vanilla beans would work to give a pleasant flavor...
Can some one tell me about the use of a hydrometer? I have just been gaging my tobacco's readiness by touch, but if there is a more scientific method available I'd like to use it. Smile

Ok, one more question which I will probably post on another board, too- Does anyone know the best place to buy/order Vera Cruz tubes in midnight or nocturne? Any other fun, pretty and functional tubes out there?

Thanks so much for any help! Smile

Sarah, I use a boring old digital hydrometer from Walmart (8 bucks). I try to keep my tobacco at 70%, but I've heard other opinions. I also just use simple hydro discs for my stash. 2 per pound. Works well for me.

http://www.cigarettetobacco.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_101&products_id=178 for Vera Cruz Midnight and other tubes. Never had a problem with them, and love their product.

I bet placing a vanilla stalk in with a small sample of your fav blend would work. Sounds a bit too sweet for my tastes, but more power to ya. I personally wouldn't add the actual bean or the fruit pulp IN the tobacco, but a small one oz experiment by adding the pulp or peels to a nyquil cup or some other small container and then hydrating the ounce in a slightly larger container would give you a safe start without risking ruining a full lb.

Hi -

I tried 4 to 1 water/honey once and didn't see much difference. I tried 3-1 water/honey and it still didn't! I think that since I cure my tobacco in a kiln, it sweetens up so much that a little more sweet just doesn't help. Using whiskey or bourbon is usually a trick used by chew, snuff or dip tobacco users. It is simmered with the tobacco for 5 minutes or so along with a syrup.

I grew SilkLeaf which is very similar to Virginia flue-cured but does appear to be a little sweeter. Now I am adding burley to it at 80% SilkLeaf/20% burley blend and that's about perfect! No more additives. Like y'all said, I don't know what additives do when they burn and don't care to find out. Next year I'm also growing this Black Sea Turkish Samsun to add a little zing to it. Straight tobacco is fine with me!

They outlawed flavor tobacco! This is crazy. Is shisha tobacco outlawed?
