I've noticed over the years the the anti's rhetoric has gone from "non-smoking" to "smoke free". I for one can't stand that phrase. I think it's smug and condescending. However, instead of being fairly neutral like non-smoking, "smoke free" carries with it much more judgemental and argumentative connotations, and unfortunately all the goodwill points that word "free" has in our collective unconscious. It seems like the anti's way of framing the debate. Words are so powerful; you control the words you control the ideas; you control the minds. Just an observation.

I realize I've had diaheria of the keyboard since I joined this forum, but I've been building up my thoughts and ideas about this issue for years. I've just never really had a place to express myself before.

On the other hand, the modern use of the word "free" is as an appendage to terms such as
"smoke-free", "sugar-free", "fat-free", "salt-free", and "no-count".

I think you're amazing. There are not many like you, who see past petty desires to other people's pain and that's sad. Nonetheless, it is young people like you who give me hope for a brighter future even if this ol' coot may not be alive to see it.

I've been a futurist most of my life looking forward to each new piece of technology. But I'd gladly give it all up this very second if I could spend my last days in the 60's. Since that will never happen, I do my best to beat anti back into his mud hole.

Thank you! I'm honored you would say such a thing.

I've often wished to go back in time myself. What good is all the technology if all the simple pleasures of life that sustain a spirit are either taboo or regulated out of existence. My mantra is: "Give me dumb appliances and smart people, not the other way around."

Add a question mark, it becomes a slogan:

Smoke?Free
