One of the myths of progressivism I think is that people equate moving forward in time with growth. The words "old" or "outdated" are considered argument ending criticism. I don't understand why this is. We as a society are just as capable of regressing as progressing. I think the treatment of smokers is a prime example. For me, there is no excuse good enough to treat a human being the way the anti's treat smokers, none. The fact that more people don't see what's wrong with such treatment astounds me. I remember in one of my college classes I read about the Roman Colliseum and how watching people die there was a favorite pasttime. The book's authors expressed suprised that even the upper supposedly civilized classes found this a valid form of entertainment. I wasn't suprised at all. It's human nature to conform and make excuses for the way we treat others, or to treat those with whom we disagree as subhuman. Then you can do whatever the heck you want to them in good conscience, and that is dangerous. The question is do you think the majority will recognize this in time, or will the damage be irreversible?

It is of course the dark side of human nature and You are correct; it is not a new concept.
It is also not a new concept to became a victim after being the member of the cheering or indifferent crowd for a while.
It is, of course an open question as far as the majority recognizing this in time or not.
Some of the damage done by the extremists at the nico nazi movement on the issue of tobacco control is already in my opinion is irreversible although there is always a room for damage control.
A typical case of how a good concept can be perverted and distorted by zealots, fanatics and profiteers when moderates stay on the sidelines for variety of reasons.
