While technically a workplace does have the right to restrict behavior on their property on worktime, I think the whole concept of a "smoke free" workplace is disrespectful to employees who happen to smoke. Honestly, how hard would it be to carve out a pleasant little area where people can smoke a quick cigarette and get on with their day? My guess is not very. I'll never understand the mentality of those who have a chance to make people happy at little cost to themselves and instead decide to bully and coerce them.
I know some which have 2 or more 'verandas or patio like' extensions as well as roof top areas.. THOSE can easily be made into the smokers deck.

Or they start, and get flooded under a mountain of paperwork from the anti's. |

What kinds of paperwork do you mean?
I wouldn't mind seeing a few "Truth" commercials about the anti's. I don't think people realize how big of a business it is, how much money is involved. Does anyone remember that awful "bubble boy" commercial, where a guy was walking around in a plastic bubble because of the health risks of SHS? I thought that was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen, and remember it as a pivotal moment in my evolution as a smoker sympathizer. |

All those Truth commercials were pretty macabre and in your face. Looking back, they are probably the main reason why people take the attitude that it's ok to harass smokers. You know, monkey see, monkey do. |

True enough, but I would think it would produce the opposite effect in a lot of people too. When extreme claims are made, there's usually a significant part of the population who thinks the claimant is full of sh**. I think the whole smoker harrassing phenomenon boils down to the anti's being a bunch of followers who think they're leaders. They're like the kid on the playground who is only able to pick on you because he has a couple of thugs to back him up. If anti-smoking weren't trendy and socially accepted, I'm sure very few smokers would be harrassed. We're hearing a lot about the "Blue Dog" democrats these days, why not "Blue Dog" non-smokers? I'm sure there are a lot of them out there. It would be an interesting documentary. |
