Hi everyone...new here to posting but a long time reader. Previously I didn't have anything to report but now I do. Nebraska Legislators have punched a small hole in the statewide smoking ban set to go off June 1. They just passed an EXCEPTION to the ban that will allow CIGAR bars in Nebraska to allow cigar smoking. One crazy thing about it is they also say that you can smoke ONLY cigars and not cigar(ettes). If you ask me that is pretty stupid but this seems like it might be a start to something. I'll report back anything more I hear on the subject. Cheers!

That is utterly obnoxious. But very telling...betcha the politicians like lighting up those stogies.
Same thing happened in NYC... |

| Not surprising AT ALL. Cigar and pipe smokers always have thought they are a higher life form. Ah-Nuld is a good example. Builds a smoking tent for his cigar habit , in defiance-which is cool, since he made sure it's right under the office window of a rabid anti, but then signs into law the 'can't-smoke-in-your-own car' if children are present bill. "Ya-it is for the childrun."You notice the federal tax increase wasn't anywhere near as much on pipe tobacco or cigars. |

Same sort of thing happening here:
Quote: The tax rate on other tobacco products, such as pipe and chewing tobacco, would jump from 40 percent of the wholesale price to 70 percent of the wholesale price. But, responding to complaints from local makers of premium, hand-rolled cigars, lawmakers agreed to raise the rate on cigars from 40 percent to 50 percent of the wholesale price. Thinner cigars that resemble cigarettes would be taxed at the same rate as cigarettes |

First of all, in NE, I am sure cigarette smokers can fire up, who the heck is going to rat on you? It is not like there will be any non-smokers in there except maybe the CBLC and she loves the aroma of a good cigar.
Second, all tobacco taxes are bad. I fight as heard for cigarette tax relief as I do for cigars and pipes. WE are all in this together and we all have to fight this evil.
For some reasons legislatures seem to deal more harshly with cigarettes than other tobacco products. |

Cigar Manufacturers have their own lobby groups - and they keep themselves separate from the Big Tobacco lobby groups.
Cigar guys will always say Cigars aren't like cigarettes and should be treated differently - they lump pipe smokers in there too [most Cigar stores sell Pipe Tobacco]
Notice the SCHIP was very lenient on Cigars and Pipe tobacco - they lobbied Congress, there were tax levels in the past versions of SCHIP that would have injured the Cigar/Pipe industries - they changed the tax downward with their lobby activity.
The Schip RYO tax was the same as pipe tobacco in the past write-ups- days before the bill passed they reduced pipe and cigar taxes and raised RYO through the roof!
Cigar/Pipe trade doesn't rely on RYO for much profit at their retailers....RYO is the direct competition to Manufactured cigarettes - Big Tobacco secured more of their marketshare by inflating the RYO tax. Cigar/Pipe Retailers were happy with their lobby efforts - Big Tobacco was happy with their lobby efforts - government was happy with the tax structure - RYO consumers got hosed.....
Tobacco has been separated - only the inhalers are getting raped with taxation at this time.
Why do you think they are going after e-cigs now - inhalation + big Pharmacy is ticked that they didn't get the product out to the market themselves. |

I am sure cigar lobbyist are doing what ever they can to provide relief for cigar manufacturers and I don't blame them
But we are all in the fight together to stop smoking regulations at all levels.
I am a little disappointed in the cigarette companies on how quickly they have given in on some issues concerning cigarette regulations in the past. It seems that cigar interests have a lot more fight in them.
I think all smokers need to fight, fight, fight!!
I know at HS and youth baseball games a lot of cigarette smokers kind of stand off to the side with their cigarettes hidden in their hand trying not to draw attention to themselves, whereas I sit right behind the backstop with my feet up and a fine imported cigar lit up.
I don't back down and I do not aplogize for my smoking cigars, but a lot of cigarette smokers are very timid about smoking in public. That is probably because they have been demonized and beat down for so long. I would guess that the cigarette smokers on here are not timid about their love of smoking and that is a good thing.. |

| Interesting note: At the casinos here in MN, you can smoke cigarettes but no cigars or pipes. (They are all Native-American owned and not subject to the smoking ban....drives the local antis nuts) |

| I used to listen to the "Cigar Dave" syndicated radio program, 'for cigar afficianados', as he puts it. He tries to engineer resistance to smoker bans and such, so I got interested. After hearing him say for the 81st time, "Oh, there's no comparison between cigars and cigarettes-it's like apples and oranges, cigarettes are bad for you, cigars are good" I stopped listening. Also-the other thing that made me quit listening to the show-every other commercial was a statement saying '"Warning: The surgeon general has declared cigar smoking as hazardous to your health" OR-"Warning! Cigars are NOT a safe alternative to cigarettes." A fucking constant mandated disclaimer on a pro-smoking show. I couldn't stand it any longer. |
