I'm seriously considering the whole RYO and GYO (grow your own). However, I live in an apartment and was wondering if anyone had advice on how I could GYO in this situtation? I do have a balcony where I grow tomatoes but is it at all possibly to be able to grow tobacco as a potted plant? I'd be most greatful for any advice.
Thanks so much!

I believe you can! I remember reading a forum, I think it was the seedman.com or coffinails.com, where quite a few people in apartments (in the UK and Canada mostly) were using 5 gallon tubs per plant to grow their own in their apartments.

Check them out. Google "growing your own tobacco" and you'll find lots of information.

You're welcome! We all need all the help and information we can get these days!

And for the trolls out there, I mean in terms of us NOT giving in to anti schemes to get us to quit smoking.

Dear Saggioculo,

Here is a good site for information on growing your own.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Tobacco-Growing-and-Curing-at-Home

The seeds are very hard to start and get to the stage where you can plant them outside or in larger pots. That said, tobacco is a weed and grows very well in numerous locations and types of soils. I would suggest purchasing "plants" from the seedman.com or some other source. As you can see from the site above, the plants are quite large. Each plant I have read will yield between 6 and 12 oz of cured tobacco. You need a lot of plants to grow a years worth of smokes. Then you need a place to cure the leaves for at least 6 months.

I bought Virginia Bright seeds and very few have germinated using peat pots and potting soil. The small plants take another 60 days under ideal conditions to get to the point of being able to grow outside. I have a "green thumb" and grow numerous vegetables and flowers from seed, but tobacco is another matter. I just hope to have maybe a dozen good plants in the ground this year to try it out. Virginia Bright can be smoked almost immediately after drying I have been told, and if you let it cure in a shed or barn for 6 months, it will be much better. It does not need to be "flue cured".

We all are looking for "easy cheap answers", but I am afraid there are few to be found. This summer I will be looking to make friends with some Amish Farmers in Deleware who grow tobacco to see if I can purchase some leaves to dry myself this fall and winter. This seems to be the best route for me, and it is not illegal to purchase or sell raw tobacco leaves, they are not taxed. Only processed tobacco is taxed.

Good Luck

I noticed that also, I purchase 5 strains from Seedman. Virgina has the poorest germination rate. Burley and Black Turkish are doing best.

Thank you all so very much for all the input. I'm hoping that I will be able to grow my tobacco strictly from a pot but if this won't work I've talked to the landlord and I might be able to get a small portion of earth to plant my tobacco. I'm determined to grow my own. So again thank all so much for all your advice. I'm currently looking into building my own drying box for the tobacco. I'm a wood carver by trade so I doubt I'll have any trouble in that area.

Thanks again

Did you get the brightleaf or gold Virginia? I got Virginia Gold from seedman and although it took a bit of time for them to sprout, the germination rate was exceedingly high.

The Virginia Gold, guess I must of done something wrong. I'll try again next season.

Not necessarily. There were three people who ordered the Black Sea Samsun and none of us got sprouts, Seedman stands behind what he sells so he sent us all fresh packets to replace them. Of course, it was too late to get them in the ground this year, but I had other Turkish already growing.

It could be an issue with the seeds. It does happen, as some of us already learned this year. I have more Virginia Gold going this year than any other species. I will allow two of those to set seed. I can send you some seed later in the year if all goes well. Hell if both plants survive and both seed, I will have more seed than I will ever be able to use. I wouldn't have near the varieties of seed I do have, except we have been sharing and mailing seeds from one end of the country to the other this year.
