Oh Man I am peeved....
April 1 the tax went into effect here in Virginia. I saw people walking out with grocery bags of cartons trying to ward of the eventual price of what they will have to pay for cigaretts. I have rolled my own for the last couple years, and the price of an 18.00 bag will be around 40.00 in the future, if I pay. I do not think I have ever seen such a proportional tax in my life. Except the half of my paycheck which already goes to state and federal taxes as a single person. All the while I know some of that tax money will probably go into fueling the private jet of some fat cat we have bailed out of his excessive life style. Something is seriously wrong here in America now days.
I can't wait till the day I hear the term the "War on Tobacco" and how much it's gonna cost the taxpayers to pay officials who have to enforce the New Tobacco smuggeling laws, LOL. Tobacco sniffing dogs at every air terminal and port in America. And cracking down hard on all them Tobacco bootleggers, and home growers, good grief! We will probably have to increase air suvalence costs over rural areas not only for maijuana growers , but tobacco growers as well.
I tell ya, doesn't anyone remember the prohibition days?
As for the drug companys it's not far from the truth. They have some hand in it for themselves also. They already make a fortune in nicotine cesation products, and the people who try and try to quit, mainly because of cost increases. I can forsee prescription cigarettes paid for by the insurance company for those who can't kick the habit. God knows my brother quit smoking 2 years ago and still chews the gum because he's addicted to it. "Is it tuesday already? I have to go to the tobacco clinic for Nicodon treatment" I'm being silly but with these Anti-whatever groups left and right you'd think some people just didn't have anything better to do than persecute someone else's freedoms. In my opinion it's just a lot of job security for High paid officials who wouldn't qualify to work at Burger King. Paid by our Tax dollars, to kick us in the butt once more.
And as for PETA my favorite group. "Save a Chicken, Smoke a Turkey". |

I'm not so sure about nico-addiction. My brother John chewed that crap for 8 years. When he had to cut expenses, I suggested he switch to plain chewing gum. When I saw him again about a month later, I noticed after dinner like clockwork he whipped out a piece of ordinary chewing gum. I asked him if he felt any withdrawal from the nicorette and get this.... he said, "no, not a bit. Except now I worry about always having enough gum on hand." |

Yes, I asked my brother the same thing. Why didn't he just chew regular gum? He admittedly said He's addicted. Of course this from someone who use to chew and dip tobacco also.
I guess for me the question is not whether it's good, or bad for me. It's my right to use a legal substance. Now if the government wants to pay for all the anti smoking campaigne. Then they should make tobacco illegal. God knows the FDA will yank any drug off the market that shows it is more hazerdous than good for the patient. So why havent they done it with tobacco? Because it's a persons legal right to smoke. It's the extremists who brought in prohibition, and extremist who are trying to bring the war on tobacco. God forbid if someone took away their glass of wine after dinner, but I guess that was before their time. Some of these activist haven't a clue why they are doing what they are doing. They just have the need to be radical about something, and need an underdog.
I saw the other day an health official saying nicotine caused cancer. Oh My! And then a Doctor who said nicotine it's self is just a stimulant like caffeine. OK! People no more coffee for you, it causes cancer! LOL Another good example of misinformation being use to their own means. Mr. and Mrs. GoodyTwoShoes sticking their nose in someone elses business where it doesn't belong. |

FYI...The FDA currently has no jurisdiction over tobacco but it appears that may be changing in the very near future. Even then, the bill introduced in Congress explicitly forbids the FDA from making cigarettes illegal. Waaaay too much money in play, especially now with S-CHIP. |

Yeah, my brother thought the same, that's why he continued to chew nico-gum for 8 years. It boggles my mind that it never occurred to him nor was he the least bit upset when I brought the no withdrawal thing to his attention, that he spent all that money for nothing. |
