In a previous post (prior to some investigation) I stated that I was not really interested in "growing my own tobacco", however after three days of Internet investigation and viewing a lot of sites related to growing your own tobacco, the idea does not look so bad. Evidently in New Zealand, the tobacco taxes are a lot higher than here, but individuals can grow their own for smoking without taxation or breaking New Zealand law.

From what I read, you can sun dry the leaves, then further cure them in plastic bags either in a hot car, or hot attic area, checking daily, until an amonia smell is found. This is when the leaves are ready either to smoke, or to store for further curing.. Cutting can be as simple as using a razor blade on the leaves, and if you want a finer cut, you can use an old blender to make the tobacco finer. Or if you want to get fancy, you can purchase a tobacco grinder for $190.00.

Evidently 12 to 24 plants, growing 60 days, will produce sufficient tobacco for a year of personal use, so I ordered a seed pack for $5.70 including shipping from the seedman.com. As long as I plan to put in a garden with veggies, I might as well try some tobacco.

Anyone else out there going to try this?

Smoke em if you got em!

I'm doing the same too. I have enough tobacco to get me through about 9 months (hopefully) and a year's worth of tubes. They will be lucky to get $100 extortion....erm I mean taxes out of me this year. I refuse to pay them.

Lynda,

I have admired your posts ever since I started viewing this forum. From what I read, you might enjoy another forum that I have found:

http://www.thetreeofliberty.com/

Take a look! A very conservative forum. A few crazy ideas, but I have yet to see anyone "flame" another user.

I also have about 9 months of tobacco, stored in original 1 lb bags in my shed, which is always cool even in the summer. I also purchased the lock and store bins for opened tobacco and they seem to work very well.

If we are successful, maybe a grow your own revolution will evolve. Then (hopefully not) the FDA will be placed in charge of tobacco, declare it a hazard and a drug, require a Rx and make us true outlaws. Or the government will try to tax our meager crop.

Why thank you. I just speak my mind. I like to say I am totally NON-PC, but I'm also very aware of common courtesy and tact. Except with rude people like the ewok who was around that have proven they deserve neither courtesy OR tact. Twisted Evil

Actually what I fear will happen is the government will realize what we are all doing (when they notice their pathetic attempt to steal from us isn't working) and try to tax our personal gardens and when that fails simply outlaw all tobacco.

In the end, it really IS total prohibition they want. They know they can't do it outright hence all these incremental steps and outright denormalization of smokers.

Never thought I'd end up being an outright rebel and law-breaker, but I can see that I will be for I will NOT lay down and submit to their demands.

Well, that all depends on who "they" are.

There are factions out there that truly seek total prohibition but they are a small minority of the anti-smoking cartel.

The vast majority of the anti organizations know damn well that they are just surfing the anti-tobacco wave for all it's worth and so far, the wave is still building and they're getting a helluva ride. At some point, they will have done everything EXCEPT outlaw it and prohibition will be the only thing left to push for to justify their existence. This will create huge headaches for them as the minority factions of true prohibitionists will come to the forefront of the movement, demanding that the cash cow be led to slaughter. This is when things will get interesting.

And then there's the government and....well....let me put it this way: If smoking bans had actually led to smokers quitting in droves, gov't would have put an end to them long ago. As it is though, gov't gets to have their cake and eat it too.

By then there will be newer targets and the majority of sheeple will have been properly brainwashed so they'll never even notice the financial raping they will receive. WE won't be needed anymore.

THAT is where I see things going........Twisted Evil

Hi everyone just found this forum and damm glad I did. I just came from my tobacco guy and was reminded of the new tax although he said it goes into effect april 1st not the end of april. But anyway I bought 11 pounds and ordered 12 more and thanks to this post just ordered 3000 seeds( hopefully will make a good blend) and a book. I look foward to learning more about growing and hope people will continue sharing info here. Thanks for the info.

P.S. Maybe if we would buy in Mexico and sneek it back over the border they would let us keep it.

Rebel,

WOW, you sure are stocking up. 23 lbs should make about 46 cartons.

3000 seeds should provide enough tobacco for years. If you are serious about growing your own, you may want to join another forum on growing your own tocacco.

howtogrowtobacco.com

There is a wealth of information on every phase of this "hobby" Laughing

Just as an aside, I understand that growing your own tobacco was outlawed in Australia, but a few are doing it anyway. The government felt they would lose too much money if people grew and smoked their own product. If that were to happen here in the U.S of A I truly believe there would be a tobacco party like the Boston Tea Party.

Good Luck!
