My husband and I started rolling our own last year, and purchase our Tobacco (Sagamore Canadian) and our tubes (Gizeh Silver Tip Triple Charbon Tubes) from ryotobacco.com. Tonight, we went to the site and noticed that there is a notice that they will cease selling any Tobacco before the tax hike:
"We will no longer sell tobacco after March 30 2009"
Needless to say, hubby and I are both extremely ticked off. The tax I'll take, frankly, for a better cigarette. This closing has made me concerned that there won't be anywhere to buy bulk tobacco come April 1st (which I have no doubt was one of Phillip Morris' hopeful goals).
Are most places that sell now planning on staying open and did we just have bad luck? Is Sagamore sold anywhere else or is this exclusive to ryotobacco.com - and if so, can anyone recommend another tobacco that's similar (we go for extremely, extremely light with a very mild flavor)?
I'm also concerned about being able to get my tubes as I notice some folks don't sell them. I love my tubes, darn it. I really don't think I could go back to store-bought - I really can't stand them now.
Anyone have any perspective? Thanks.

That's a shame that they are getting away from RYO- I think RYO will be very viable after April 1st.
People who RYO/MYO now are furious about the extortion tax but there are many more pre-made smokers that will shift to making their own because of the cost of commercial cigarettes and the FSC paper that will be introduced country-wide at the end of this year.
People smoking commercial cigarettes now can change over.
It's a matter of the right marketing of the product to the masses.
Many smokers don't even know that it's possible to make a cigarette that looks exactly like a commercial cigarette - but far more enjoyable.
Please continue to buy from RYOTobacco up until the middle of March.
They will need to clear all their stock before April 1st so they don't get hit with the Federal floor tax on any product on the shelves.
There are many RYO suppliers on the net.
A quick google search will find another store for you.
These stores will run their inventories down to Zero by March 30th
But will restock with the socialist induced tax in April.
Stock up at the beginning of March - the supply will quickly dwindle. |

| That is a shame as it's the only place I know of that sells Sagamore tobacco. Another Virginia that's as good, some say better, is D&R's Windsail and Penhooker (Canadian style). Their tobacco runs about the same as Sagamore; www.cigarettetobacco.com D&R also offers bulk discounts, best to call for prices as their website is a bit archaic. |

We actually live in the same city as ryotobacco.com and so we're able to walk into the warehouse to purchase directly. According to what we were told today:
1) Sagamore is their brand, therefor none of the Sagamores will be available after March at all. For Canadian Blend smokers, there are only roughly 100 pounds of it left, and there will be no more. If you plan to purchase, they suggest you do it very soon.
2) I asked who they could recommend that would be staying in business that would have a blend similar to the Sagamore Canadian, and we were told specifically and directly that as far as they were aware and as far as they knew, *everyone* had made the decision to go out of business. They knew of only one place that had not yet decided - all others, according to them, are choosing to close.
I don't know if they truly know everyone, are just pessimistic, or are truly in contact with other companies and groups and everyone is shuttling their doors and going home, but this is what I was told directly from them.
I would like to know if anyone has heard specifically and directly from their supplier that they will be staying open for sure - at the moment, we're back to Costco and American Spirits, which isn't ideal and we're pretty aggravated, but would give another place a chance if they're making a commitment to give it a go and not fold up shop before anyone even sees how things pan out. |

I've been ordering my tobacco lately from www.pipesandcigars.com and their 'roll your own' page does announce the new tax increase as of April, they give no indication that they will stop selling ryo tobacco.
Just a thought in case you need to start finding something close to what you smoke now. |

The SCHIP tax is expected to produce a very large number of business closings as well as associated losses of employment. The most quoted projections range up to 10,000 business shutdowns with around 117,000 jobs lost in the tobacco industry. There is no doubt SCHIP will hit tobacco-centric outlets (versus supermarkets, department stores) the hardest and the smaller, local, 'Mom and Pop' versions of those the worst. Convenience stores in general will be heavily impacted by the tax as well, but will generally survive.
All of that being said, the statement that 'everybody is going out of business' is simply not true. Many are not and of the ones whose main business emphasis is RYO/MYO a fair number believe they will be able to survive. Many tobacco stores which are more oriented to cigar and pipe sales as well as other merchandise in many instances will also persevere. Other than BR Tobacco (the Roll Your Own Tobacco Store online outlet that produces Sagamore), I know of no retailers who operate online stores who intend to either go out of business or eliminate their RYO/MYO product lines.
What EVERYBODY will be doing between now and March 31st of this year is try to get every scrap of cigarette tobacco they have out of their places of business so they don't have to pay that outrageous floor tax on existing inventory. That issue is so serious that I have no doubt that no small number of retailers will be considering selling whatever stock they have left over the last few days of March at a loss in order to avoid the tax beating. Some may even be giving it away for the same reason if not just to spite the government.
Honestly though, I wouldn't recommend waiting too long to stock up on tobacco at that time if you buy your stuff from tobacco stores. Those I've spoken with told me they expected that there would be practically NO loose cigarette tobacco available in their places or elsewhere by the last two weeks of March and they didn't plan on having any until April.
The RYO Revolution website has a list of reputable tobacco retailers who both sell online and who will also be staying in business after April 1st. There is also a page there related to D&R Tobacco mentioned in posts above this one. If you are not familiar with D&R, it is a family-owned business of high integrity and reputation that produces a line of 35 or so exquisite tobacco blends that are very reasonably priced. You can find more information on D&R here. I hope some of you find this info useful! |

I'm very glad I posted - frankly, the information we got from the B&R Tobacco employee seemed a little crazy, which is why we posted what we were told.
I'm going to give D&R a try, and start stocking up - thanks! |

I just called D & R who said they are out of just about everything . Being that I'm a BIG fan of Windsail Light, I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a light brand that was of similar quality... and might still be in stock - somewhere.
Though I still have an unopened bag of Windsail here at home, it sure wouldn't hurt to stock up on a light tobacco before March 30th. |

I notice some RYO smokers online are gonna be in for a rude awakening. "I only pay 7 bucks for my own pound of tobacco and I save lots on making my own."
I guess that means that one pound will be 31 bucks as of April when I factor in the new tax of $24 per pound?
I'm sure some MYO/ZRYO businesses will close after March 31st. But not all of them.
Good luck to the OFFLINE RYO/MYO businesses as well as good luck to the convience stores that sell tobacco products period. If a smoke shop offline closes down over a period of time due to a lack of customers, that would be sad. |
