Living in the UK i cannot smoke at all in bars and restaurants, the ban is total and well policed. I have however just returned from Spain, which is theoretically covered by the same European laws as the UK and was amazed to see that every table in every bar and restaurant i visited had an ashtray on! Over there you can apply for an exemption certificate for rooms below a certain size to allow smoking. Any large rooms are just broken into smaller areas with seperate certificates, such as bar or food areas - so in fact every establishment of any size is exempt from the ban.
smokeniks are alive and well and living in Spain! |

| Here in Chicago, you would't even know a ban exists in many small neighborhood bars. After nearly a year, it's fading into obscurity now that the hoopla is over and the ban lobbyists are gone and are busy pushing bans in other places. Now with the Illinois Governor Blagovich being investigated, it will be seen how much money he made from his "Blagoban" |

My mother who is from england says the same thing. The EU has no issues (well itally, france and spain) in deporting any illegals they catch, but when it comes to the english deporting them, we always get told it is against the EU laws on human rights. |
