On both sides; non smokers and smokers, there are unfair gestures. You stated that businesses removed the ash trays from the front of the buildings when the NS laws came into effect. If this is true, this is terrible. Reading through my other threads/posts you will see that I believe the entire issue is being mishandled terribly. As for you throwing butts down in spite, as a matter of spite, you have to believe that this only compounds the problem. This type of behavior/action is only viewed as a ''good'' reason for stronger legislation against those who obviously need to be supervised and led. Basically, you are hurting and making it more difficult on all other smokers with your actions.
Also understand that the world today is not the same as it was yesterday. Some say that cell phones,,,''You don't need a cell phone! We never had them...'' Well, today is different. We have evolved. Yes! If we had to we could deal with sticks and stones. But, we don't have to! We can forge on and continue to develop our culture for generations to come. Changes are occuring. The world is changing. It is the part of civilization that makes it ''civilized''. If you are not a part of this change, you will be left behind. Physically, emotionally, all. |

I tell you Tristeneugene, many of us 'old time' posters were saying what you are now a couple of years ago, I am adamant about not throwing cigs anywhere, still am, but my patience is growing thin. The businesses and government are taking the ash cans and trash barrels away - once these things pass - they take them off the street. People are going to toss cigs - not me and most people on this board, but the frustration of the "even-more" push we as citizens are asked to adhere to is getting mighty thick - and this isn't just about smoking.
~But back to smoking~
There are businesses that proudly proclaim they are 'smoke-free' and overnight the ash trays go bye-bye outside [doesn't matter how close or far away from the door they are - they are now gone]
Now what do you get? Bunch of trash and cigarettes all over the place, one place [that I now boycott because of their stance on 'smoke free'] I had to pop into a neighboring business the other week- the place looked like a filthy sty outside, I know people who go there and know about the smoke-free - I walked away from the business - know what these people do? Because there are no ash trays - they walk right up to the front door and put out the butt on the ground right at the entrance, people that would never do anything like that in the past now are littering, I know people that empty their ash trays in the parking lots now.
That's their civil disobedience - me? - I walked away and will not give the company any business.
it is making smokers look bad to throw cigs around - but many of us just have had enough.
I used to patrol the sidewalks near an establishment I frequent, kicking the cigs into a pile to pretty up the area and rid of litter - then the powers to be got more pushy and forced their patrons to only smoke in a certain area - Fine, now the place looks like a dump - "you don't care for me - I don't care for you"....when have we all become inhuman?

Thank you for explaining that as nicely as you did. I don't believe in littering and in fact I hate litterers and would love to torture their asses....................but my considerate button has been broken (that's what happens when you are forced to bend over too far), and while I still don't litter.........I WILL use the street to toss my butt in front of businesses that were always smoke free anyway BUT had ashcans out front, that they then removed when the law went into effect. THAT just makes no damned sense to me, so scru 'em, they can clean up the butts now. |
