Even though it wasn't a total repeal that I would've preferred, it's nice to see for once that some communities are still thoughtful of private business owners, and the negative economic effects bans can do to businesses. Anyway, the Houston suburb of Pasadena chose to amend their ban(similar to what the Texas communities of Laredo and McAllen did to their former total bans last year), and now allows businesses getting mostly alcohol sales to permit smoking:

Yeah, I'd welcome a revision like this in my area too.
They revised it to be OK in alcohol establishments - kind of a "Vice" ruling....if one 'vice' is mostly allowed - other 'vices' are waived.
Now we need them to open up the fat/transfat vice...if a coffee house/bakery where x-amount of 'bad' food is being served - we can also get a smoking waiver - will help the tea-totallers.
Of course, only if the owner of the establishments want it. |

Going by the vice argument, they should also allow coke and hookers ... just kidding!
I think it's great that they actually woke up to the fact that smoking should be allowed in bars. Hopefully this catches on! |

Hmmm, can't help but agree with ya, since you traditionally picture greasy spoon-type places as traditional ones where smoking usually was permitted in(and I still picture such places as smoker-friendly ones, even despite since both the former Chicago city ban, and IL state ban taking effect). Maybe they should make it so that places that sell the most food with saturated fat/trans-fat can permit smoking.
Regardless, I'll always disagree with bans in private businesses, and especially ones where non-smokers have a choice not to enter. 'Nuff said. |
