PRECISELY! God knows it worked for me! |

I second you, alist, and smallbird, since I don't want this board to be flooded with spammers either. Not to mention, based on my observations over the last few months, I can damn well tell that new posters have continued to join here, even if certain ones choose not to post very often. |

I used to hate those confirmation email processes, but have come to appreciate them greatly over the past few years as it really does cut down on the spam drastically.
Now when I see that a confirmation email is required I feel the site is at least well run, and usually is (though there's always the a$$hole to ruin a good thing hehehe).
If someone can't be bothered with confirmation emails, fvckem. I recently joined a witches discussion board where upon joining I recceived an email giving me 5 days to respond with a little information about myself and my reason for joining (these I really hate...LOL).
The owner later told me that he really didn't really read every word, but those who did reply he felt were honest and serious people and not some fanatical religious person going to cause chaos on his board. He just wants to keep peace on his discussion list with like-minded folks and keep the busy-body converters out.....LOL |

Before the email confirmation process we did get a lot more signups from non-spammers, but a lot of them (if you can believe this) thought they were signing up to get discount coupons for cigarettes. So while we do have fewer new members (about 5 a month) these are mostly more serious people.
Oddly, only about 20% of the people who request the password ever come back to sign up. Not sure why.
What we used to get, however, were about 20-30 fictitious spam accounts each day. Then of course they'd post automated messages about viagara and pron, etc. That has been reduced to zero, so I have been happy with the results of the new email confirmation option. |
