| It was on the 11 pm news tonight that the State of CT will mailing out back tax bills to 3,500 people in CT. The news cast reported that one person owes $11,000. It didn't give any other information as to how they determined the amounts or where they got their information. I have a feeling it may have been from the YES bust a few years ago at the airport in NY when they confiscated a shipment from Switzerland. |

| I know if I owed that much in back taxes, folks can keep on dreaming if they think I can come up with an extra 11k. I wonder what the penalties will be for CT smokers who refuse to pay the back taxes. I heard smokers in my state can lose their assets for not paying (according to a female lawyer who I talked to once....and she smokes herself). |

(Hartford-AP) _ Bought some smokes on-line? Beware: The tax man may be coming after you.
The state Department of Revenue Services is sending notices this month to Connecticut residents who owe state taxes on unstamped cigarettes they bought over the Internet. The first batch of letters will be sent to 150 people.
Ultimately, at least 3,500 people will receive notices.
State tax officials don't have a specific amount of money that they expect to collect. But one individual owes more than $11,000.
Federal law requires out-of-state retailers to give state tax departments detailed information about purchases of cigarettes sent to their state. Online and mail order retailers must provide names, addresses, brands and quantities of cigarettes shipped to each state.
That information allows states to make sure taxes are paid on those cigarettes.
Connecticut's cigarette tax recently increased to two dollars a pack. |

| I'm paying over $3,000 in cigarette taxes to the state of New Jersey, as are tens of thousands of others. NJ came up with an archaic law that says it can confiscate the records of companies that do business with NJ residents from out of state, something to do with interstate commerce. So the state has confiscated E-Smokes and Seneca Indian NY, and I don't know how many other companies' records. I know of no organized protest here, I suppose everyone's just paying up, although some of the stories are heartbreaking of poor people and retired people using up their savings, it's really pitiful. |

And you notice they ONLY use that archaic law for cigarette sales? When they start using it for ALL internet sales, when they start stopping state license plates returning to the state from out of state and checking for purchases that were bought to avoid taxes, THEN they might have a good argument.
Right now this is just outright discrimination against smokers. Harassment. |

I'd love to see my sister's reaction should they ever decide to stop everyone coming into NYC for purchases made outside the city/state that were tax free.
She visits a friend in Delaware several times a year, and every time she goes, she shops and spends near $1,000 because it IS tax-free. She called me a tax evader for ordering online, BUT when I pointed out that she did the same thing......and spent even more money than I did, she said it wasn't the same. So I told her, then why bother shopping there, when you have no car and have to lug 2 extra suitcases (big ones) home on the bus and subways?
She got pi$$ed at me..............can't imagine why.......hehehe  |

Isn't it kind of dumb for people who live in Connetticutt to risk buying smokes online? Maybe they ought to be taxed...though in New England ,already taxed to death, I doubt if anyone would much notice an additional 11 K in taxes. 
The reason I say that it is crazy is that it can't be a really far drive to the N.Y indian reservations where they could buy them with cash and avoid the trap. Go once or twice a year and stock up. Wish I had that easy of an option. There are abundant Indian Reses here but none seem to have the economic drive or iniative to take advantage of offering cheap smokes. 
Hell I go to Kentucky and North Carolina from Oregon to do so, combining pleasure trips with stocking up.
Oregon says I can't bring back more than 200 but Oregun you can kiss my u know what. Way I figure it is I go up to Seattle say to watch a ball game I don't pay Oregunner taxes on the beer I buy and drink up there...or anything else. Why should it be different for smokes?
I better shut up...one day this state may just set up roadblocks and search each and every vehicle coming into the state to force taxes on everything purchased out of state. |

Only if you have Oregon plates on your car, Junge. The state of Washington did that thing for a while! What an uproar!  Maybe you should try Idaho for cigarettes, less expensive than both Oregon and Washington. |
