Anyone who is burned up by the statewide smoking ban may want to attend today's meeting hosted by the Arizona Alcohol Service Providers Association, a group seeking to overturn the ban.
The AASPA meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Irish Pub, 9155 E. Tanque Verde Road.
The law took effect May 1 and bans smoking in public places such as bars, restaurants, public restrooms and entertainment venues. Smoking is also banned within 20 feet of entrances to those places.
The ban, approved by voters 54 percent to 46 percent in November, is also known as Proposition 201 and The Smoke-Free Arizona Act. According to AASPA members, it's a violation of rights on all levels.
"It has an impact on business, workers and our civil rights," said AASPA co-chair Glenn Gifford. He said businesses will continue to lose money and workers may lose their jobs.
Gifford said he understood about not smoking in a restaurant. But he said he was outside an airport terminal a few days ago and was chased down by a cop for smoking too close to the door.
A major fear, he said, is that more bans will follow. He likened such actions to George Orwell's "1984," which depicts a totalitarian government.
"We've got our boxing gloves on," Gifford said of the non-profit organization. "We'll be forward-looking at what we can do."
