Chicago, Ireland, California, New York City – the writing was on the wall, said Bob Gwinn, owner of the Cary Public House. A smoking ban is coming, and lately, it’s all his patrons can talk about.
Now that ban is just one signature away from reality after legislators approved a statewide prohibition on smoking in all public places. Gov. Rod Blagojevich said Tuesday that he planned to approve the bill that would forbid smoking in bars, restaurants and other public workplaces, including private clubs.
The restrictions would take effect Jan. 1 and make Illinois the 19th state to impose such a ban.
