HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Today was the last chance for smokers to light up on this resort island before a new smoking ban in indoor restaurants, bars and businesses.

The ban, which goes into effect just after midnight tonight, is similar to bans already in effect in nearby Bluffton and unincorporated areas of Beaufort County since last January.

Hilton Head Island is the latest in a growing number of South Carolina municipalities that have banned smoking in recent months. The first was Sullivans Island about a year ago.

Nine governments across the state now have passed smoking ordinances, according to the South Carolina Tobacco Collaborative, which works to support smoking ordinances.

A law banning smoking in indoor businesses statewide is being considered by lawmakers in Columbia. That measure allows exemptions for some bars which do not allow people under 18.

The Hilton Head Island ordinance exempts private homes, retail tobacco shops and as many as 25 percent of the rooms in hotels.

Religious ceremonies and theatrical performances involving smoking will also be permitted.

The penalty for violating the Hilton Head Island ban is a fine of as much as $500, which can be paid either by the smoker or the business owner.

There goes another cancelled vacation spot!!!
