Look at what this guy says - not anti smoking, but anti-SMOKER

Henry also chastised Maitland for raising taxes. Maitland supported a 35-cent increase in the cigarette tax.
Maitland defended the increase.
"I am a militant anti-smoker," he said. "If you increase the tax for cigarettes, you reduce cigarette consumption."

I don't know about you, but I'm giving to this guy:

Not true in NJ. In NJ, this statement can be changed to read, "If you increase the tax on cigarettes, people will think of more ways of avoiding it." This moron politician probably just analyzes state tax stamp sales! He sees a decrease in tax stamp sales as a decrease in consumption. This naive man must have lived a sheltered life.

Why does anyone care if a person chooses to smoke? It is just stupid. Vote all the bums out I say. If you truly want politicians who will leave us alone and let us choose to smoke, then go out and vote Libertarian. At least with us you know where we stand, on the side of freedom.

Speaking of shameless plugs, mind if I plug my candidacy? Well, I'm running for State Representative in Texas. To learn a bit about where I stand on the issues visit the following links:

Republicans and Democrats are always taking away our freedoms. Lets start taking them back. End of rant. Smile

irishguy,

Good luck in the race!

Have supported candidates in the past that weren't in the major parties. Always astounds me how afraid some people are of voting for anyone not in the two biggies. Never could understand. If the "representation" we get from most Dems and Reps doesn't scare the poop out of them, it astounds me that anything can! Crazie

I love these politicians who think they are doing good by raising cigarette taxes. That is a hotly debated topic here in KY where we have the lowest tax since VA raised theirs. I won over a lot of people on a local radio call in show not long ago. A State Senator was on advocating a 75 cent tax increase (I know that sounds low to y'all in states with taxes way over that, but it's only 3 cents/pack here now) and he started to use the "it will keep people from starting and cut back on consumption" argument. Well, I called in and my argument was that we get tons of money from people in other states, probably more than 60 percent of cig sales here are from people that don't live in KY, a lot of tax money. If you raise the tax, they will have no reason to come here to buy them, less reason to eat at our restaurants etc.... On top of that, then cig sales will go down and the state will lose money on a higher tax. Then he said that "there is no noticable decrease in cig sales in states that raised their taxes" which was an awesome statement. I then got him to admit on air that "yes, it is just a revenue increase tax on KY smokers and it most unlikely would not reduce cig consumption". It was great. Every caller after that and even the hostess changed her mind and went on the anti-tax side.

This fight is so tiring. Why can't politicians worry about the important stuff, like balancing a budget or terrorism?

I use to go to Richmond once a year with a few friends to smoke all the brands of cigs, and check out the different tobacco shops and farms. Now I won't if they raised the tax over 2 1/2 cents a pack. I think their state tax is still 2 1/2 cents. The VA dept of taxation and RJRT have not made any changes to that yet. Could it be that Richmond has imposed a 25 cent city cig tax? I know they were talking about it. If I go to KY next year on vacation, are there any local city or county taxes on top of the state tax?
