_ Smoking ban bill returns to House committee Tuesday
THE BRIEF:
SMOKING BILL REDUX: A broad smoking ban bill made more narrow in recent weeks will return Tuesday to a House judiciary committee for debate. An earlier version of the bill that would have prohibited smoking in offices, restaurants, bars and virtually all other public places was pulled because the bill sponsor said there weren't enough votes to pass it on the House floor. Rep. Hugh Holliman, D-Davidson, the primary sponsor, said the new bill only would bar smoking at restaurants statewide but give individual counties the right to expand smoking restrictions further if they choose. Workplaces as well as bars where adults only frequent would be exempt from the statewide ban, according to Holliman.
