Passive smoking linked with TB risk in children

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=3011656

Apr 5, 2007 — NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A study conducted in South Africa suggests there is an association between passive smoking and increased risk of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in children living in a home with a tuberculosis patient....

... The rate of positive tuberculin skin tests was 34 percent in children with a smoker in the home compared with 21 percent in those who were not passive smokers. The difference was not statistically significant.

However, there was a significant association between passive smoking and a positive tuberculin skin test in the 172 households that had with a patient with tuberculosis. Children living in these conditions were nearly five-times as likely to test positive.

Look at this article. I wonder if this study acccounts for other things that would add to the risk of the children. Maybe TB carriers that smoke are also more likely to tranfer the TB in other ways than SMOKE.

I wonder who funded the research.

SHS and TB transfer, yeah right.TB can be transmittted several ways,I'm sure coughing is one of them.Different types of TB are also a factor.

Well they are at it again! The standard protocol for people being tested for exposure to people with TB is 5mm not 10mm. This is the size of the area of the raising of the skin. All test subjects with a rise of 5mm or more should have been reported as postive per protocol. I would like to read the results of all the test subjects. The antis just love violating procedures.
