School bans Mother's Day cards
Last updated at 23:50pm on 7th February 2007

A school has banned the making of Mother’s Day cards because the headteacher does not want to upset children without a mother.

Helen Starkey has ended the tradition in the interests of "sensitivity".

House Bans Slaughter of Horses for Food
by Luke Burbank

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5786985

Morning Edition, September 8, 2006 · The House voted Thursday to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Only a few U.S. plants slaughter horses. The meat is sold as a delicacy in Europe and Asia. Opponents say the practice is barbaric, while supporters say it's actually the most humane way to deal with unwanted horses.

Temecula takes smoking bans to new territory
March 19, 2007 11:18 AM PDT

By: NICOLE SACK/Staff writer

Sitting in his smoking chair, flicking ashes into a can, a Temecula renter relaxes in the shade of his apartment patio pulling drags off his Marlboro Light.

His name is Brad and he doesn't want any trouble, which is also why he doesn't want to give his last name. For eight years, he has rented an apartment on Pujol Street in Old Town and in that time he said he has never had any complaints from his neighbors about his smoking.

However, this guilty pleasure on his front stoop could soon become a crime. The Temecula City Council is considering restricting smoking in apartment buildings, both inside and outside of residences...

Marquette Bans Dave Barry Quote from Office Door

They Call Joke About Federal Government 'Patently Offensive'
MILWAUKEE, Wis., October 18, 2006

http://thefire.org/index.php/article/7396.html

In late August, Ditsler posted a quote by Dave Barry on his office door in the philosophy department. The quote read, “As Americans we must always remember that we all have a common enemy, an enemy that is dangerous, powerful, and relentless. I refer, of course, to the federal government.” On September 5, Philosophy Department Chair James South sent Ditsler an e-mail stating that he had received several complaints and therefore removed the quote. He wrote, “While I am a strong supporter of academic freedom, I’m afraid that hallways and office doors are not ‘free-speech zones.’ If material is patently offensive and has no obvious academic import or university sanction, I have little choice but to take note.”
