Report: Bloomberg To Raise Cigarette Tax, End Clothing Tax
March 31, 2007

Mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly wants to exempt higher priced clothing from the sales tax and add onto the cost of cigarettes.

The Daily News reported Saturday that the mayor is pushing for an additional 50 cent tax on a pack of cigarettes, which would put the combined state and local taxes at $3.50.

The additional tax would make it the second largest in the nation; Chicago has the greatest cigarette tax.

The paper says he would then look to eliminate taxes on all clothing in the city. Currently only items under $110 are tax free.

The state legislature would have to approve the idea.

Anyone know if this arsehole ever succeeded with the dumba$$ idea of raising the cig tax there? I wish I could somehow forsee the idea of it failing, but NYC seems to be getting so leftist nowadays(and more anti-smoking), that sometimes I wonder if I even should care about NYC anymore(a la California)......
