I recently got a new assistant, he's a really hard worker so I couldn't understand why he hasn't been promoted but when I started working with him I found out that he nips out for four cigarettes a day which his old boss found unacceptable, despite the fact his boss takes two hour lunch breaks and keeps a bottle of scotch in his desk. Not the good stuff either, cheap bastard!
We got talking over a smoke about how work has changed. He was utterly stunned to hear that not that long ago I'd turn up at work and sit down and smoke a pipe or cigar at my desk while reading through what I needed to do for the day. He just couldn't get his head around the idea that even a non-smoker would happily sit in the same room as me and even say stuff like "why dont you have a pipe old boy, it always helps you think" when I got stumped with a problem.
I'm sure that kind of english plummyness is the last thing most of you would want first thing in the morning but it was a bloody pleasent way to work. I just thought I'd post this as his reaction made me think.
He said: "Wow, I can't believe people were ever that free." |
