Well, today is the first day our bar couldn't smoke. We had a $68 day. At this rate, we'll be out of business before New Years. Thanks Ohio. Too bad we didn't know about today when we bought our business 1 1/2 ago. We would never have bought a business in a state where everyone but us controls our business.

I really feel sorry for you Pam, my family owned a bar in Ireland and as soon as the smoking ban came into effect their profits fell by about 80% and have stayed that way. I hope you have better luck.

Defy the bans.. Just allow smoking. Set up a network of smoke easies or just flat out let em smoke. Charge a dollar or so to cover fines... stand up for what is right. The EU retracted their ban because they couldn;t enforce it.

I don't know why they can't have smoking bars and non-smoking bars that way everyone can choose. Over here the law will change soon so that no bars will be able to have smoking. Not sure about the EU backing down, I've not heard about that - you sure? Doesn't sound like them to listen to public opinion the whole idea of the EU is so that faceless civil servants can make rules and national governments can say oh sorry about that, we don't have any control its those bloody EU people that nobody voted for, bad luck. No coincidence that the EU had exactly 666 seats when it launched if you ask me!

This is for sure the best, and perhaps the only way to fight these scolds.

Pam....have you even considered getting together with fellow bar owners and, as a group, simply defying these bans? Breakin' out the ashtrays and letting 'em smoke like it's 1999? You'd need a lot of owners on board and it couldn't be just a one night "Smoke-in". It would have to be night after night....just like there was no ban. It might cost some money for some fines now but if you guys hang together on it you would win big time in the long run. I'm sure they're using the threat of revoking liquor licenses but if you've got at least half the bars in town on board (you in a big town?) I doubt the citizenry would put up with them shutting all of you down because people are....gasp.....smoking at a bar.

Stupid laws that are ignored usually become moot. If everyone's doin' it, the authorities at some point will throw up their hands and say "enough is enough...we're not gonna fill up the courts and jails with tobacco users".

DO NOT waste your time and money with any lawsuits based on contitutionality or property rights. The courts always side with "Public Health" even though we all know this has absolutely nothing to do with health.

We have all got to grow some morroccos and take back our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness by whatever means are necessary. Pam....it might even go down in the history books as the "Ohio Tobacco Party" led by Pam 'Ban-Buster' (insert last name).

Whaddya say Pam? Be the leader and get the ball rollin'!

Because this has absolutely nothing to do with health and everything to do with money, power and social engineering.

Pam....get in touch with every bar owner in town who is against this ban and tell them about smokinglobby.com and GET THEM IN HERE!!

Bill, how would you feel about your site being used to organize and plan the Ohio Tobacco Party? (and soon the Minnesota Tobacco Party)

Who says we can't fight these bans from our keyboards? I think we can! At least organize the movement.

The beauty of total defiance is:
1) I'm absolutely certain it would work, and
2) No lawyers, no judges, no legislators, and the only debate needed is when to implement.

I'd be happy to make a whole new website for it if there was some serious interest and some people who want to get involved ...

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070311/COL05/703110333/1009/EDIT

They say business is down 40 percent for bars that enforce Ohio's smoking ban, so most are ignoring or defying the law. And if they don't throw it overboard like tea in Boston Harbor, business will go down the drain like spilled beer.

A growing trend maybe? Let's hope so.

Backers of the voter-approved ban insist that bar business has actually improved because more non-smokers are coming out.

Never ceases to amaze me that the antis have the audacity to tell the business owners that the losses they're experiencing are a figment of their imagination.
