now this will not mean anything to any of you who do not live in London but i will continue
i live with my family in Bristol and every so often i take my kids back to London to see their grandparents-now i grew up in Catford and i started using this pub when i was young and have been going there for thirty years now and have seen the good times-restaurant/no-smoking area and the bad times-fights/drugs etc.
so during my last visit there i was chatting to the landlord re next year smoking ban effect on his pub-he said, this will close us, no question about it-half customers smoke, however he had gone to great pains to make over half the pub for non-smokers only
so a couple of weeks ago i receive a phone call from my mum to tell me that this pub was closing and flats would be built where the pub used to be-reason is that landlord did not think it worthwhile renewing the lease only for it risk closure next year
now this is a travesty-a brilliant pub has been forced to close due to a law that does not come into effect until next year-and this is a pub that has bent over backwards to accomodate non-smokers but was aware that the major part of its revenue comes from those who smoke
i think this is a crying shame and only the beginning

The story you tell has been told a thousand plus times on this side of the pond. Good people, present owners of businesses a few generations old who tried to accomodate people of all sides of the issue and were doing so well, have lost their life savings and had to let go, also good people, who had worked decades just trying to satisfy what the public wants.
Why? Because a few elitists backed by greedy pharmaceutical companies convinced some greedy politicians that they knew what was good for society.
If you are as browned off as the rest of us, don't take this passively. Join forces with others in your area fighting bans. Better yet, join Forces.org and start fighting this internationally.
If you and others don't, the elitists will end up dominating your life in your choices of food, alcohol consumption and even how much body fat you are allowed to carry.
George Orwell had it right. |

| He did, indeed, he was only off about 20 years on his date. Hell, I'd give one of my nuts to turn the clock back to 1984. |

Dave, are you aware of www.thebigdebate.org ? You have to register to get to the main part of the forum.
They are based in England, and they're trying to fight the ban. When Colin checks in, he can tell you more about it.
So sorry about your favorite pub. There will be many more stories like yours if these bans aren't stopped soon. |

it means everything to us daveagle and our hearts weep with yours...read up on the good wisdom that this site and most of these folks have to offer...
the have-a-nice-day puppet stepford wife assholes could give a [doodee] about tradition, compassion, freedom, health, family, or anything decent...the only thing you may learn from them is that we all need to go against our easy going nature and blow smoke in their ugly demonic faces and trust they will most assuredly die off running into the melanomic sunset waving pink ribbons raising children that hate them to grow up and realize the TRUTH...it's not too late...smoke up, drink up, make alot of noise, and smile while you're doing it...we WILL have the last laugh...they've made such hideous fools of themselves, we have already... |

Sorry to hear about this, Dave.
These lying sacks of [doodee] keep saying these bans don't hurt business, when we know they're lying out of their stinking teeth.
I have a friend in Ireland, and a bunch of antis posted nonsense about how the bans there helped business.
Needless to say, he quickly debunked their bullshit with a link to his local paper.
These are the the new puritans. And they will not stop at anything until we all bend to their will.
I say, [freak] 'em. |

Hi Dave,
As TN says, I am heavily involved in The Big Debate. Come on in, you will find many friends finding practical ways to slow down, and ultimately, end the nightmare.
We are now aiming for a Judicial Review in an attempt to get the science debated in an open court. There are many activists doing good works. See if you can get involved. You will be most welcome.
I am an Englishman and I live in Scotland, I work for a Dutch company and spend most of my time in Africa, so I have seen many places find a happy balance using ventilation. I now know this to be the simplest, most effective way of non smokers and smokers coexisting peacefully.
The anti smoking jihadi's (mentally unstable, every last one of them) try to deny that there is a solution to suit all. Obviously, there is.
The ban here in Bonnie Scotland has torn apart communities, has been responsible for at least two deaths, five bingo halls have shut down, and several pubs have closed. Most pubs & clubs have lost an average 12% in revenues since the ban, but the yellow press report that all is well. Expect similar shite to be written in the English press next year.
I look forward to welcoming you to The Big Debate.
Stay well, and stay positive. We will overcome. |

hi Colin and everybody else
it is good to see that this has provoked such a strong reaction as i thought it might-i will defintely have a look see at the big debate in a bit
bear with me while i tell you another tale
in the same area of London-Catford if anybody knows it?-there is a Servicemans Club-consists of men who have served in the forces in any capacity-now goes back to WW11 veterans-invitation by another member only-my dad served so i get in-now the majority of the customers here are getting on in years and they like a smoke with their pint as they have done for decades
well as of next June, they will be forced to have a smoke outside in all weathers-these are men who are in their 70s and 80s who fought for their country for Christs sake-now they are being treated worse than dogs-i know that these old men are angry and confused and wondering what the hell is going on
this makes my blood boil and i am so angry that i can actually hear my teeth grind-the anti-smoking jihad have decided what we must do and therefore we must do it-well, guess what, the only thing i have to do in this life is breathe, that it is it, period
well, listen, i am quite happy to meet friends in a pub who do not smoke and if i fancy one, i will shoot outside or into the smoking area-my choice-or sometimes they will sit with me in the smoking area-they are not concerned-but they agree with me that this total ban is outrageous and should be opposed with force

Dave:
We have the same problem over here. Many Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts have had to turn their smoking members out into the cold and heat (presently here 110 degrees temperature index). In some states, these veterans clubs have filed suit because because bans apply to them but not to country clubs or high-roller private clubs.
Here, money and power does what money and power wants to do regardless of the rules set down upon the rest of us.
An example: in smoke-free New York City, it is widely know that when nanny Bloomberg holds a party for his international friends, there are smoking accomodations for the high rollers who want to light up. Supposedly, Richard Branson is one of them.
As one of your fellow Brits wrote: "Some pigs are more equal than others." |

DC, that is one of my favorite quotes from "Animal Farm".
Here's an article that you would love. You missed this while you were gone:
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20060724-122221-9669r.htm
I'm not angry or resentful of this at all. I love the fact that someone is powerful enough to tell the anti-smoking vultures to "[freak] off and get out of my office before I put my foot up your ass!" |
