Press release

June 29, 2006 - The anti-prohibition group FORCES International is challenging claims made by the US Surgeon General this week that passive smoke presents a risk to the public and that the evidence is “indisputable”.

In a succinct two-page document, FORCES addresses the shortcomings of passive smoke risk studies and concludes that “independently or combined, these considerations negate the credibility of claimed ETS risk for lung cancer, and are equally applicable to ETS studies of cardiovascular and other diseases.” Instead, a proper interpretation of the evidence can only yield the conclusion that it impossible to determine whether passive smoke is in the least harmful.
FORCES, an independent organization that fights junk science and the trend toward government control of properly private behaviours in the name of “public health”, has long criticised the anti-smoking movement and its backers for misrepresenting the significance of ETS studies.

“This new document is intended to make our argument clear and easy to understand for the common person,” said FORCES President Maryetta Ables. “That’s not an easy job, because we’re trying to simplify something rather complex. The anti-smoking movement doesn’t bother to explain anything – they just pump out emotion-laden slogans. That’s why they get away with frightening the public.”

“The ETS scare isn’t about health, it’s about politics of social control,” added FORCES CEO Gian Turci. “Public health is making a big power play right now, stepping into a role that goes way beyond its traditional and legitimate responsibilities. That’s the real issue -- one with considerable consequences for a democracy -- and it’s time people took notice. ”

FORCES is active against the “lifestyle police” public policy model that is increasingly condoned by governments, supported with public money or money originating from the pharmaceutical industry as it seeks new market opportunities, and stimulated by prospects for novel and lucrative litigation. FORCES condemns junk science, hatred and intolerance toward smokers, the overweight and other citizens targeted for common self-regarding lifestyle choices that have recently and falsely been claimed as harmful to others.

That was probably me in response to your response to my commentary submittal about the Minneapolis "smoking areas".

Glad to see you stopped in. Would like it if more Forces people would pop in now and then.

I think this Surgeon General "report" (and I use that term loosely), has got a lot of people here talking more about galvanizing the pro-freedom effort. All we really do here is [beeyotch] and whine but, misery loves company.

Hey, runamok, where's your submittal for that and could you post a link?

Just heard yesterday they approved the light rail down University ave. connecting St. Paul and Minneapolis, so you can bet a lot of small business owners are beginning to sweat, while the St. Paul and Minneapolis city councils are both licking their chops on how much money they can personally pull in.

Went to Minneapolis yesterday for the first time in a year and Urban Wildlife is now out of business.

Don't know the details, but there was an eviction notice on their door.

I hope they don't plan on posting all commentaries in the forums based on the state it applies to. They'll just get lost in the shuffle of the 3 billion threads they have listed.

If that's the case I'll simply post my sarcastic, yet enlightening (says me) commentaries right here at smokinglobby.

Hi again!

The idea of our forum is possibly somewhat different than others. As forces.org draws international interest, as this is an international problem we created the "international" forum.

So, what is the difference from our forum and others? Those who are not "just whiners", the anti's who also join, lurk, etc. and the other folks who want to complain, but do nothing have someplace to do so.

But those few who are the "doers", the intelligent, and the ones who want to really make a difference - they can be offered access to the locked down forum where the "real action" will be happening.

Example, there is a closed forum for the Board of Directors there, but you cannot see nor access it. There is an unlimited number of locked forums available to us.
