Been doing the MYO thing for about 6 months now, and I'm still experimenting with the "dryness factor."
I started out with Canadian brands (Belvedere, Players) and they come in a tub that has a little disk attached to the lid that you're supposed to dampen, to keep the tobacco moist. So, I've been doing that. Seems to me the moister the tobacco, the more tobacco it takes to fill a tube. Am I correct on this?
I just recently switched to buying bulk from the USA, and the tobacco is in sealed plastic bags, and seems to be about as dry as the Canadian, before using the disc - maybe a touch drier. The cut is finer, and used "as-is" seems to take a lot of tobacco to fill a tube. I've been using one of my old tubs to hold my daily stash, and moistening the disc.
So here's my question: How dry should it be? Should I let it sit and air dry before using? If so, how long?
Your thoughts are appreciated! |

godzoriz,
Me thinks that the moisture content depends on your personal taste.
I use the Premier and it calls for a drier tobacco, I like to have it moist to the point of just before it sticks up the cutter.
After you find your preference you can adjust by the feel or buy a doo -dah meter and keep it on the money
I've quit counting but the rule of thumb is ---2 cartons for 13oz.

Check out the videos at ryomagazine.com
In ther multi-media section, there is a good video on the correct moisture content for injecting into tubes. |
